BRAIN Journal: Assessment of the Contributions and Psychological Damages of Technology to the Education at Schools by the Individuals in These Schools

As we live, we all start to notice the impact technology has on our lives. No matter where we go, we are surrounded by it. Our lives became easier thanks to technology, but also a series of disadvantages emerged, like the reduction of social interaction or the loss of contact with the real world. The paper Assessment of the Contributions and Psychological Damages of Technology to the Education at Schools by the Individuals in These Schools written by researcher Behcet Öznacar tries to grasp on the impact technology has on the educational field. The fact that technology is functional, it is shared and spread over and used in all our life shows how much the use of technology is important in the education field (Şişman & İzmirli 2012). Behcet agrees that students and also parents should embrace technology together with education. But what is educational technology?

BRAIN: The Impact of Infographics in Education

Information graphics (also called infographics) are graphic visual representations of information that aim to present information quickly and clearly. Their main purpose is improving cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends. The paper “The Impact of Infographics in Education”, written by Mobina Beheshti and Huseyin Bicen, investigates what are students’ thoughts on using infographics in the education system and whether they deliver satisfactory results in academic communication.

In academic communication infographics can be used to illustrate complex information in a compact form. It is a feature that enables teachers to prepare various learning activities that increase the collaboration, engagement and conceptual understanding of the learners.

BRAIN: Integrating MOOCs in Embedded Systems Blended Courses

The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) phenomenon has been growing in popularity and importance in the last decade, receiving valuable recognition from renowned universities from all over the world. MOOC can be simply defined as an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In the latest issue of the BRAIN Journal, Răzvan Bogdan’s paper approaches a modality of integrating MOOCs into embedded systems higher education.

The academic field of Embedded Systems aims to enhance student’s understanding through various methods, however students find the concepts as being very monotonous and tend to avoid building practical solutions. In this paper, the author presents the introduction of MOOCs with no synchronization into the Embedded Systems courses at “Politehnica” University of Timișoara, Romania.

General information

SMART 2016 – Scientific Methods in Academic Research and Teaching is an international conference that brings together specialists in Social Media, Education, Informatics, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, in order to create a proper environment for debates regarding the use of new technologies and of the most creative strategies in research, higher education and other fields.The acronym SMART was also used in the previous editions of the conference (Bacau – 2013, Timisoara – 2014 and Voronet (Gura Humorului) – 2015), when it stood for “Social Media in Academia: Research and Teaching”.

The previous editions of SMART focused on understanding the way in which social media can generate a poza_conferinta_smart_2016_timisoarapositive influence on the learning process or on the academic research. Furthermore, it was highlighted the role through which web 2.0 can help in the civil/social/political engagement.Beginning with 2016, SMART also extends its areas of interest on recent research in Education, either connected to Social Media or not.

Benefiting from the experience in editing and coordinating the academic journal BRAIN – Broad Research in Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience (indexed in Web of Science), we considered that approaching topics related to Artificial Intelligence, Neuroscience or Cognitive Sciences is also useful for the conference.

Pre-conference MOOC

This MOOC consists of selected conference presentations as short videos that demonstrate the main outcomes of the authors’ contributions.

The scope is to enhance the discussions and exchange between the participants in the conference and all those interested in the SMART topics. If you enroll and complete the MOOC, you can gain an open badge as a record of your achievement.

The MOOC is supported by a grant of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation, CNCS – UEFISCDI, project number PN-II-RU-TE-2014-4-2040.
